EPICENTER '09: “SO CAL'S ROCK EXPLOSION” ARTISTS INCLUDE TOOL, LINKIN PARK, & ALICE IN CHAINS

NEW ANNUAL ROCK FESTIVAL PRESENTED BY RIGHT ARM ENTERTAINMENT DEBUTS SATURDAY, AUGUST 22 AT FAIRPLEX IN POMONA WITH TOOL, LINKIN PARK AND 10 ADDITIONAL ACTS

Southern California rock fans now have another festival to add to their calendar.

EPICENTER '09:  “So Cal's Rock Explosion” will debut Saturday, August 22 at Fairplex in Pomona with Tool, Linkin Park, Alice In Chains, Wolfmother, Atmosphere, Hollywood Undead, Atreyu, Street Sweeper Social Club, Aesop Rock, Sonny and others TBA.

The annual music festival is presented by Right Arm Entertainment (creators of Ohio’s successful Rock on the Range annual festival) and will feature 12 acts throughout the day on multiple stages, with music set to kick off at 12 Noon.

“Talk about a killer lineup,” says Linkin Park co-frontman Chester Bennington.  “Tool, Alice In Chains, Wolfmother—if we weren't performing, we'd come just to see all the bands.  This is gonna be our only North American gig all year and we promise to make it a show to remember.”

“To introduce a new rock festival in Southern California, you have to dream big,” says Right Arm Entertainment’s Gary Spivack, co-executive producer of the festival.  “Having Tool is an event in and of itself—and when you add Linkin Park's only 2009 North American concert, Alice In Chains, Wolfmother, Atmosphere and all these acts, it’s more than we could have envisioned for the first Epicenter.  We’re dedicated to making this the best rock festival of the summer.”

IT DOESN'T PAY TO 'SHARE' MUSIC: APPARENTLY 24 TRACKS COST $3.6 MILLION!

If 24 tracks are worth $3.6 million, the equivalent of about 2 albums worth, than you better start saving your pennies if you intend on filling up your ipod.  And this is just an exercise in futility because tell me how the 32 year old woman plans to pay this back?  She doesn't. She will file bankruptcy, which people in much less dire scenarios are doing everyday.  So at the end of the day, just another waste of taxpayers money.  Am I saying that records companies should stand idly by while their products are 'shared'? No.  Am I saying that the 'sharing' should be condoned? No.  What about radio? Pandora? Don't these people 'share' music with everyone?  Are you going to discriminate because of the media used? Or avenue of distribution?  Not only is radio giving music away, they are monetizing doing so by selling advertising against it.  Is Jammie making a living or anything from 'sharing' her music?

I think it should go like this, Jammie takes out a sub prime loan backed by the government to buy the music she wants (to the tune of 3.6 million).  Then she can pay back the record companies the money they are seeking, and she should life time access to all the music she could ever want.  Then write the government a letter informing them that they will in fact need to 'Back' the loan and that she is 'bailing-out'.  How is that for a story for ya?

AEROSMITH TO PERFORM 'TOYS IN THE ATTIC' FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER ON '09 SUMMER TOUR

AEROSMITH PERFORMING CLASSIC ‘TOYS IN THE ATTIC’ ALBUM IN ITS ENTIRETY FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER ON CURRENT NORTH AMERICAN SUMMER TOUR

During their current North American summer tour, AEROSMITH—America’s Greatest Rock ‘N Roll Band who’ve sold over 150 million albums, won four Grammys and been inducted into the Rock and Roll of Fame—is performing their classic TOYS IN THE ATTIC album live from front to back, along with an array of AEROSMITH hits. This marks the first time ever that the band has played the 8-million-plus-selling 1975 disc in its entirety.  The influential TOYS… has inspired many musicians, including REM, who covered the song on 1987’s Dead Letter Office.  In addition, a copy of the album was one of two AEROSMITH albums that astronaut pilot Mark E. Kelly took with him on board the Space Shuttle Discovery on a 13-day, 8.5 million-kilometer trip to the International Space Station in July 2006.

TOYS… features the hits and AEROSMITH concert staples “Walk This Way” and “Sweet Emotion” and the LP was featured on Rolling Stone’s list of the “Greatest Albums Of All Time.”  Writing about TOYS IN THE ATTIC in the November 1, 2003 Rolling Stone feature, the magazine said: “This is where Aerosmith perfected their raunchy blues-rock sound, with guitarist Joe Perry laying down some of the Seventies' most indelible riffs on ‘Walk This Way’ and ‘Sweet Emotion,’ and Steven Tyler stepping up with an album full of unforgettable songs about his favorite topic: sex.”

BUMBERSHOOT 2009 VISUAL ARTS EXHIBITS

The Seattle-Moscow Poster Show
Curated by Daniel R. Smith
Shaw Room

Focusing on posters as cultural expression, The Seattle-Moscow Poster Show marks the culmination of a three-year exploration of graphic art as bridge between cultures. The show is a selection of more than 70 posters, half from each city, sharing cultural themes such as music, film, theatre, and contemporary art. Seattle-based designer Daniel R. Smith is curator of the show featuring Moscow designers Ostengruppe, Sicksystems and Mainstreamers as well as Seattle artists Jeff Kleinsmith, Coby Schultz and Barry Ament of Ames Bros and more.

Gage Academy Drawing Jam
Curated by Gage Academy of Art
Rainier Room

The surprise hit of Bumbershoot's 2008 Visual Arts lineup (with approximately 10,000 festival-goers attending in ‘08!), the Gage Academy Drawing Jam, is back—and it's bigger and better (now with sculpture!). The 2009 edition will allow art curiosos the opportunity to attend art school in the midst of Bumbershoot, complete with art supplies, figure models and professional artist demonstrations. Gage Academy of Art is a non-profit art academy offering classical instruction in drawing, painting and sculpting; their achievements include the 2007 Governor’s Arts Award for excellence in art education.

Kerfuffle (or The Uneasy Relationship Between Humanity and the Environment)
Curated by Chris Weber and Lele Barnett
Lopez and Fidalgo Rooms

A multi-faceted multimedia show with works that explore waste, regrowth, and sustainability. The show will include Chris Jordan's photographic portraits of global mass culture; Allison Kudla's capacity for (urban eden, human error), which utilizes state-of-the-art technology to "print" intricate bio-architectural constructions out of plant matter; and work from Vaughn Bell, Joseph Gray, Karen Rudd, Christina Seely, Brent Watanabe, Kuros Zahedi, and select works from Terra Nova: Sinfonia Antarctica by Paul D. Miller aka DJ Spooky.

Dada Economics
Curated by Greg Lundgren and Vital 5 Productions
Orcas and Olympic Rooms

Dada Economics is the remarkable celebration and culmination of a unique artistic experiment. Created for Bumbershoot by Greg Lundgren's Vital 5 Productions, the goal of Dada Economics is to engage and inspire creativity and art making on a world stage. All summer long, Arbitrary Art Grants are being distributed in a wide variety of artistic fields. Dada Economics will not only showcase the hilarious and often brilliant submissions collected throughout the summer, but Bumbershoot patrons will have the chance to participate in the exhibition, creating works in fashion, architecture and photography. Professional artists will be on hand to help inspire and develop ideas. Each day a new Arbitrary Art Grant will be awarded to a Festival patron who has dared to share their originality.

ON THE FESTIVAL GROUNDS
The Bumbershoot grounds offer arts beyond the boundaries of the Northwest Room gallery spaces. The expanded presence of the arts throughout the Seattle Center campus is evident with unique spectacles and random acts of artistic performance. In 2009, these site-specific attractions will feature Wise Fool New Mexico’s “Flexion,” a show that will stretch your perception of the human body, set on Seattle Center’s Fountain Lawn. In addition, fans may encounter a parade led by Jason Webley, sculptural installations specifically created for Bumbershoot by Julie Lindell, captivating fountain performances from DASSdance, appearances by mobile hedge All-Terrain, performance from Portland’s Woolly Mammoth Comes To Dinner dance company, Amy Steel's Snack Bar, hand-made midway games by artists Chris McMullen and Steve Withycombe, a flea circus, and many more artistic actions to abound around the grounds.

OFFICIAL BUMBERSHOOT 2009 ART
Bumbershoot is proud to work directly with two Seattle artists on this year’s official Festival artwork and annual Fine Arts Poster.

Sasha Barr
Official Bumbershoot 2009 artwork
Bumbershoot’s 2009 campaign artwork was created by Sasha Barr, a Seattle-based illustrator/designer. Born and raised in Tennessee, Barr relocated to Washington in 2007 to embrace a different pace of life and a cooler climate. His portfolio includes work for Sub Pop and Suicide Squeeze Records, Intiman Theatre and a number of artists (including rock posters for Ray LaMontagne, Death Cab for Cutie, Cat Power, The All-American Rejects, among others).

Warren Dykeman
Bumbershoot 2009 Fine Arts Poster
The Official Bumbershoot 2009 Fine Arts Poster features “Fullness,” a work from local artist Warren Dykeman, an Eastern Washington native and graduate of Western Washington University. Dykeman grew up in Kennewick, Washington, just outside the Hanford Nuclear Reservation. Having lived under the shadow of America’s atomic ambitions, Warren’s work is informed by the Cold War era Americana that surrounded him in his formative years. The selected piece featured for this year’s poster displays his graphic design roots, incorporating handmade sign lettering, digital art and a variety of materials to create rhythm between contour and color, ultimately developing a unique take on primitive folk art. The 2009 Fine Arts Poster is made possible with support from the Seattle Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs.

2009 MAYOR’S ARTS AWARDS
Mayor Greg Nickels will honor the recipients of the 2009 Mayor’s Arts Awards in an outdoor ceremony at noon on Friday, September 4 at Seattle Center’s Northwest Court. The ceremony, which is free and open to the public, will feature award presentations followed by the official opening of Bumbershoot’s visual arts exhibits. This year’s free public preview will remain open until 7pm. In addition to the exhibits, Bumbershoot will kick off the 1 Reel Film Festival early with a free special screening of award-winning shorts from around the world beginning at 8pm. Bumbershoot’s visual arts exhibits and Fine Arts Poster are presented with the support of the Seattle Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs.

The recipients of the 2009 Mayor’s Arts Awards are:
Artist Trust, Jesse Higman (artist), Speight Jenkins (Seattle Opera General Director), Northwest Tap Connection, Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestras

The Mayor’s Arts Awards are presented in partnership with Bumbershoot®: Seattle’s Music & Arts Festival, and are sponsored by City Arts Seattle, a free monthly magazine discovering creativity throughout Seattle. For more information visit seattle.gov/arts.
