Review: Rocco DeLuca, David Ryan Harris at Hotel Cafe Last Night

So it was Africa hot, the risk of dehydration was high, no one could really get drunk because you would sweat out your drink before you had time to get the next one in you.  Despite all the adverse conditions and needing a few extra changes of clothes, Rocco played a great set.  The folk-blues-rock tunes swirled through the thick Hotel Cafe air and cooled the spirits.  Accompanied by Ryan Carman on the cajon, RDB's  set consisted of The Gift, a new song When You Kissed Me, and Swing Low among others.  It was like being in New Orleans — hotter than a June bride in a feather bed — and great music pouring forth from the speakers.

David Ryan Harris was great as to be expected.  The usual suspects were in the house as well.  Michael Chaves, Sean Hurley, and JJ Johnson. Did you say JJ Johnson?  Why yes, I did.  JJ flew in from Austin, TX just to rehearse and play David's set.  The house was packed, cold beer was served, and DRH dished out a 90 min set that consisted of some of his best guitar playing and an incredible drum solo by tripple J.  The set list:

Sweetest Berry, Pretty Girl, Hendrix cover Electric Ladyland (Have you ever been to Electric Ladyland - if you want to be technical), All I Need, Hold My Fire, So Real (Jeff Buckley cover), Strong Enough (accompanied by Angel Taylor), and Yesterday Shutting Down (the 35 min version).

Buckle up NYC, as he is coming to deliver the goods before embarking on the summer tour to support our friend Mr. Mayer. Q: Is it selfish for us to constantly desire more? Maybe so, but in this case it is ok to be selfish.  Don't forget to catch DRH and Tyrone Wells at El Rey on June 14. Cheers.
