Bonnaroo: Pearl Jam Ignites, Kanye West Irritates
Last night under the stars in the humid Tennessee air, Pearl Jam performed an amazing show for 60,000+ cheering Bonnarooians. Originally scheduled from 10:15 to 12, they continued to rock the masses for almost 3 hours. Despite the sun, and long day, the sea of people were ignited and did not grow weary. I particularly enjoyed when Eddie Vedder broke out into Save it for Later (The English Beat) toward the end of Better Man.
Kanye West, however, was quite a different story. Originally scheduled to go on at 8 on a different stage, he requested a later time and the main stage in order to perform his current Glow in the Dark performance that he is now touring. Well, not sure that was the best idea. Re-scheduled for 2:45am so he would have time to set up the elaborate staging, there were some challenges. First, Pearl Jam finishing at 1 instead of 12 cut an hour into their set-up time. Secondly, getting all the elaborate staging set up, video walls, projectors, etc etc. So if he was an hour late, that would be understandable and forgivable to a degree. The crowd didn't see it that way. After the time being prominently displayed at 2:45, then changed to 3:30, boos rang though the fields. The masses became irritated and started to thin. The time was changed again only to be met with more boos and thinning. Lauren Hill's Lost Ones played as the prophetical lyrics told the story, "you might win some but you just lost one", I couldn't help but laugh. It was almost insulting as he finally took the stage at 4:30am (almost 2 hours late). He was met with people jeering not cheering and throwing water bottles into the projectors.
I hear the show under normal circumstance is phenomenal and would like to catch it. But for this time around, sorry Kanye you just lost one.
What was Kanye thinking? If I wanted to see the Glow in the Dark tour, I would have paid to see THAT show. But to make people wait so he can do his elborate set up was like shooting your own foot! I'd be pissed off. this is why I'm reluctant to going to big festivals. 4:30am? I'd rather be sleeping. I heard that he had a tissy fit at his last show cause someone throw a bottle. Dumbass.

I am so jealous hehehe! I am a big pearl jam fan,crazy about anything pearl jam and hearing "hard to imagine" "all night" and the cover of who "love reign o'er me" is a dream. Those rare songs are just beautiful live. I hope they do a west coast leg of this tour. Great review Erik!!!
