As they launch their summer tour of intimate venues tonight at the House of Blues in Cleveland (July 6), THE SMASHING PUMPKINS have released their fifth free track, “Freak.”  The song—with its deep rhythm groove and red hot guitar lines—arrives today at radio and is available for free download, with no strings attached, at the band’s website: www.smashingpumpkins.com.

“Freak” is part of the iconic band’s in-progress 44-song work TEARGARDEN BY KALEIDYSCOPE, with songs being issued online one at a time for free (4-song physical EPs will be made available as the songs are released).  “Freak” is also the first song from what will be the band’s second EP, TEARGARDEN BY KALEIDYSCOPE VOLUME 2: THE SOLSTICE BARE (release date TBA).

The Pumpkins released the first EP, TEARGARDEN BY KALEIDYSCOPE VOL.1: SONGS FOR A SAILOR, May 25 via Martha’s Music/Rocket Science Ventures to great acclaim, with Jerry Shriver of USA Today describing the music as “a delicious swirl of howling psychedelic rock and melodic ballads (5/25/10).” This very limited edition collector’s EP is packaged in a beautiful collector’s silk-screened wooden box. Each box will contain a 4-song CD, a vinyl 7” and a hand-carved obelisk.

The Pumpkins’ summer’s set list will be, says leader and founder BILLY CORGAN, “a balance of classics, a few obscure ones, and new ‘Teargarden’ material.”  And CORGAN and his band mates—guitarist JEFF SCHROEDER, drummer MIKE BYRNE and new bassist NICOLE FIORENTINO—deeply dug in their heels when they performed a nearly 90-minute sold-out and critically acclaimed warm-up show at the Viper Room in Los Angeles last week (6/30).   Raved Spin.com (“exhilarating,” 7/1), AOL’s Spinner (“the new lineup showed it may be the best since the original version in the '90s made the band icons of the alternative scene,” 7/1) and Artistdirect.com (“raw, real and ready to take the world over—again,” 7/1).

The Pumpkins’ tour schedule includes an array of headlining U.S. dates including a July 26 New York City headlining show for Spin magazine’s SPIN25 series and two festivals in Japan.
